Sometime after 1958 (when he finished his teaching diploma) and before his death in 1963, Gavin Alston began to paint this mural on the wall of the dining hall at Kingsridge Secondary school. He taught at this school for five years. Sadly, the mural has since been destroyed when the school was demolished in 1992.

The theme of the mural seems to be 'the cycle of life'. From left to right are shown parents with a baby, young boys climbing a tree to retrieve a kite, a chain of children dancing or marching along a path, an old couple seated on a park bench and in the distance a young man and woman, embracing, walk into the distance. The continuous narrative scene unfolds against the backdrop of a park, reminiscent of the Botanic gardens or Kelvingrove in Glasgow.

The painting seems to have been left unfinished.
